Allied American University (AAU) now offers four medical certificate programs that provide comprehensive curriculum on a university level. Students who want to enter the growing healthcare field as a medical biller, medical coder, medical administrative assistant or pharmacy technician can now take their coursework to the next level and set themselves apart in the market. The certificate programs are particularly good for military spouses who want to start new, portable careers with growth potential.
The four certificate programs give students the necessary essentials, while additional university-level coursework enhances core skills and helps give them an advantage in today’s healthcare field. The programs include:
Medical Administrative Assisting - Students learn the basics of
medical administrative assisting such as coordinating patient care, maintaining patient records, filling out insurance paperwork and handling billing and bookkeeping. Additionally, students gain knowledge of electronic health information management and learn about Electronic Health Records (EHR) software, as well as develop a strong comprehension of English Composition to equip them with the tools necessary for professional business writing. Employment of medical assistants is expected to grow 34 percent from 2008 to 2018, much faster than the average for all occupations.*
Medical Billing - Students are oriented to the background and importance of insurance, coding and the
medical billing processes encountered in a physician office setting. Accurate healthcare documentation is emphasized, while students are enabled to distinguish and differentiate among the various ICD-9-CM codes, requirements and insurance providers. Additionally, students will learn Electronic Health Information Management and how to utilize Electronic Health Records (EHR) software that is commonly used in healthcare settings. Employment is expected to grow much faster than the average. Job prospects should be very good; technicians with a strong understanding of technology and computer software will be in particularly high demand.*
Medical Coding - This program teaches students the
medical coding conventions and guidelines for the ICD-9-CM, ICD-10-CM, CPT and Level II HCPCS medical coding system and how to apply the rules to assign codes for patient medical services accurately. A variety of healthcare payer systems is also presented that includes Medicare, HMOs, PPOs and managed care. Additionally, emphasis is placed on the importance of professional business writing, to enable the student to communicate clearly and effectively with insurers and other business entities. Employment of medical records and health information technicians is expected to increase by 20 percent, much faster than the average for all occupations through 2018.*
Pharmacy Technician - The essentials of medical history, pharmacy settings, drug regulation and administration are just some of the subjects reviewed with the
pharmacy technician program. Students learn to assist the pharmacist in providing optimal pharmaceutical care to individuals, which may include drug distribution, inventory management, pharmacy administration and customer service to patients. Additionally, a comprehensive review of English Composition and Algebra enable the student to firmly grasp the importance of good communication and mathematics in this growing field. Finally, the program prepares the student to take the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) exam. Employment of pharmacy technicians and aides is expected to increase by 25 percent from 2008 to 2018, which is much faster than the average for all occupations.*

Allied American University (AAU) is continually evolving in order to provide every student with an online education experience that is both timely and high-quality. That's why the university is proud to begin spring 2010 with Charli Hislop, a 14-year online education veteran, as president and chief compliance officer.
Hislop began her career in the online education field with Allied Schools, Inc. in 1996. From ensuring compliance standards are met at all regulatory levels to progressing business/course development efforts and launching Allied National High School, she has had the pleasure of playing an integral role in the overall growth of the Allied Schools' family of companies.
Throughout the years, Hislop has witnessed how the progression of
online schools has made obtaining an education possible for a whole new population of students - including deployed active duty service members and individuals who work full-time. In fact, not only does Hislop advocate the flexibility and accessibility online education empowers a student with, but she experienced it first hand when she completed her MBA at an online university in 2007 while maintaining her full-time career and family.
"Distance education is important because it allows students to receive education on their terms and schedule," said Hislop.
AAU caters to a wide-variety of students, each with unique challenges and educational goals. For example, students can pursue
online associate degree or
bachelor's degrees online in
Business Administration,
Computer Information Systems,
Criminal Justice or
General Studies. A variety of concentration programs, such as Green Property Management and Real Estate, will provide a timely, competitive edge to a degree program.
AAU's 100% online and transferable general education courses are popular with students from other colleges who are faced with impacted classes. Also, AAU offers solutions for individuals who want to accelerate their current professions with 15+ online, university-level certificate programs, including Internet Marketing, Computer Programming, Management and Terrorism and Security.
AAU students enjoy more than the convenience of online, self-paced courses. Additional benefits include:
- No hidden costs – no extra charge for transfer credit evaluations, application, technology, graduation, and other typical fees
- Textbook grant covers the cost of required books
- Open enrollment based on 52 starts per year
- Live student support
- DETC accredited
- Tuition Assistance for active-duty military
Hislop's vision for AAU is to provide students with timely educational pathways that prepare them to meet the real world needs of today's economy. This includes enhancing and broadening AAU's programs that focus on technology and the renewable energy sectors. "We are excited about AAU’s future, especially since we've earned WASC eligibility status," said Hislop.

Allied American University (AAU) is proud to announce that Henry Moultrie Jr., a technical sergeant in the United States Air Force, has been recognized as the university's 2009 Outstanding Graduate. Henry received this award for his stellar academic performance and commitment to pursuing his
associate of arts degree in General Studies, while also maintaining important military and family responsibilities.
As an active duty service member, Henry's top priority was his position as an Aerospace Propulsion Mechanic at McChord Air Force Base, where he supervised a team of 24 individuals working on cargo planes. In addition to his military career, Henry is a husband and father to three young boys. Free time was a rare commodity for Henry; yet, his desire to ensure a brighter future for his family led him to purse his degree at Allied American University, an
online, military friendly university.
"My reasons for taking college classes are to advance in my military career and to obtain the knowledge and skills required that will assist me in the transition to a civilian lifestyle after the Air Force," said Henry. "I would like to someday use my degree to become a CEO or a top manager at a company, or if given the chance, to start my own business."
While maintaining military duties and attending to his family's needs, Henry successfully completed his online associate degree in only 12 months. He transferred 45 college credits that he had accumulated from military training and other universities over the years.
"Out of the different schools that I have attended, Allied is by far the best with its user-friendly Web interface and the
support of a student advisor who tracks my progress and assists me with any needs that arise," said Henry.
AAU understands that being an active duty service member with important military duties is a 24-hour operation. That's why the university offers a military friendly education that empowers service members with the resources they need to pursue a higher education.
AAU benefits include 100% online courses with worldwide access, transfer credit for military training, textbook grants, and personalized support. Service members are encouraged to utilize their
military Tuition Assistance benefits and military spouses are welcome to use
MyCAA benefits.
"Allied American University has made it very easy for me to achieve my education needs with online classes,” said Henry. “I have learned much from all the opportunities that are available with AAU."
